100 Best Companies(A)

Just off the press— in the middle of January — is the annual Fortune magazine survey of the 100 Best Companies to Work for in America. Co-authored by Robert Levering and longtime Trillium advisor Milt Moskowitz, the list has a new No. 1, Wegmans, a supermarket chain based in upstate New York but with outposts now in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Virginia. Wegmans is one of 40 companies on the list that do not trade publicly. No. 2 on the list, W.L. Gore, is also privately held. In fact, of the top 10 companies, only four are publicly traded. They are: Republic Bancorp, Genentech, Xilinx and J.M. Smucker. Newcomers to the list include Network Appliance, Symantec, Station Casinos, IKEA, Wrigley, John Wiley and Sherwin-Williams.
