California Passes Historic Climate Bill

September 14, 2018 // Boston, MA
Last week California Governor Jerry Brown signed one of the most ambitious climate policies in the United States. The new law, SB100, sets California on a path to source 100% clean energy by 2045 making it just the second state with such an ambition. Setting this new goal was a key next step that will help the state achieve its GHG reduction goals, while also ensuring continued investment in clean energy projects. This ambitious, long-term climate bill provides the much desired market certainty and predictability needed for business planning and for investors.
Over the past two years Trillium has joined our Ceres colleagues in Sacramento to meet with California legislators to discuss the importance of moving SB100 forward. Trillium met with legislators alongside other climate-minded companies like Sierra Nevada Brewing, Cliff Bar, Target, The North Face, and others. We conveyed that bills like SB100 will allow our portfolio companies to pursue long-term clean energy projects for their own operations which may reduce costs and emissions. Upon the signing of SB100 we were delighted to learn that Governor Brown took this one step further in unexpectedly announcing an executive order committing California to complete carbon neutrality by 2045.
Trillium congratulates Governor Brown and California Legislators for demonstrating exceptional climate leadership at such a critical time.
