Here’s something to think about: “The 2006 “Broccoli report” showed that broccoli produced in Sweden led to 60% less greenhouse emissions than imported broccoli. And 99% of all broccoli that is consumed in Sweden is imported, with Spain and and Ecuador as major exporters. Interestingly enough, transporting the broccoli from Ecuador produced about 40% of the greenhouse gas emissions of transporting Spanish broccoli even though the broccoli from Ecuador is transported 12,000 km compared to 3,200 km for Spanish broccoli. Ecuador’s broccoli is shipped by boat to Rotterdam, by feeder boat to Gothenburg, Sweden, and then by truck to Stockholm. …
Court Ruling Protects Salmon and Clean Water from Harmful Logging
Seattle, WA – A federal court ruled late Friday that the Bush administration acted illegally by suppressing scientific dissent in order to weaken protections for salmon and clean water from logging on Pacific Northwest federal forests. The ruling came in a case brought by fishing and conservation groups seeking to restore environmental protections primarily from logging and road building projects on steep, landslide-prone hillsides. The environmental safeguards, known as the Aquatic Conservation Strategy, were developed in 1994 as part of the Northwest Forest Plan. Leading scientists developed the ACS to protect salmon and clean water by requiring that logging, road …
Coal Plant Expansion Challenged by Conservation Groups
Kansas City — The refusal by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) to fairly consider objections to a new massive coal-fired power plant near Holcomb was challenged in court today. The plant at the heart of the suit is the proposed Sunflower 2100-megawatt coal-fired power plant. The environmental law firm, Earthjustice, representing the Sierra Club, filed a lawsuit today against the state of Kansas seeking to get a complete and fair hearing for objections to the state’s rush to approve and build this new coal facility. The proposed power plant is one of the largest, if not the …
Western Citizens Seek To Reinstate Roadless Area Protections:
The 2001 Roadless Rule was a widely supported regulation that protected over 58 million acres of public land on national forests from road construction, commercial logging, and development. Hunters, fishermen, hikers, and millions of regular Americans considered it one of the greatest forest conservation measures in U.S. history. Despite its valuable protections, the 2001 Roadless Rule was formally repealed by the Bush administration in May of 2005. …
