ConocoPhillips – Efforts to Develop Renewable Energy Sources Report (2007)

November 26, 2007

WHEREAS Due to the international requirements of the Kyoto Protocol, ConocoPhillips is facing unprecedented pressure to reduce emissions and meet clean energy demands, and growing public pressure to make significant emissions reductions. To avoid the most dangerous impacts of climate change, experts believe that we must hold CO2 emissions at or near 2004 levels for the next 50 years. Some governments are implementing ambitious reduction targets, driving the demand for renewables. For example, California and New Mexico have plans to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions from 75 to 80% by 2050; the U.K., 60% by 2050. Thirty-eight states, provinces or countries have …

Fighting Poverty, Protecting Biodiversity in Honduras

October 1, 2007

I spent my summer vacation being educated and inspired on an eye-opening trip through the Honduran rainforest as a new board member of the EcoLogic Development Fund.* EcoLogic is a U.S.-based nonprofit dedicated to community-led sustainable development that strengthens the conservation of rural Latin American’s unique and threatened biological diversity. (Some readers may recognize the EcoLogic name from the microcredit loan fund they originated, which has since gone independent and is now known as Root Capital.) EcoLogic’s mission is to protect Latin American biodiversity while alleviating rural poverty: lofty goals that aren’t always seen as congruent, even within the conservation …

Court Ruling Protects Salmon and Clean Water from Harmful Logging

April 2, 2007

Seattle, WA – A federal court ruled late Friday that the Bush administration acted illegally by suppressing scientific dissent in order to weaken protections for salmon and clean water from logging on Pacific Northwest federal forests. The ruling came in a case brought by fishing and conservation groups seeking to restore environmental protections primarily from logging and road building projects on steep, landslide-prone hillsides. The environmental safeguards, known as the Aquatic Conservation Strategy, were developed in 1994 as part of the Northwest Forest Plan. Leading scientists developed the ACS to protect salmon and clean water by requiring that logging, road …
